CARLSBAD — Hospice of the North Coast (HNC) presents an ongoing six-week series entitled “Sharing Our Stories … The Hidden Treasures” journaling series for people facing a life-limiting illness, for their family members/caregivers and for people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The next series will begin in late February.Classes are held at HNC headquarters at 2525 Pio Pico Drive, Carlsbad from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursdays. To enroll, contact Jim Reiser at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (760) 448-4268.
The series is presented by educator and essayist Anna Kelso. “We have designed the series to be non-intimidating, non-judgmental and highly positive,” Kelso said.
Sparked by prompts, participants write short essays, then share them in a safe and nurturing environment with their fellow participants. The process enables people to examine and express their feelings and emotions at what is a challenging and defining time in their life.
Participants are encouraged to expand on their essays and collect them in a provided binder; as a treasured chronicle and perhaps for future publication. Among the benefits of the high-trust environment, Kelso believes, is the creation of a compassionate space to be heard and understood; one that promotes contemplative and active listening.
Nonprofit Hospice of the North Coast was established in 1980 to fill the need for comprehensive, compassionate hospice care in North County San Diego. HNC hosts fundraising events, operates a family support camp and resale shop, and maintains a cadre of volunteers.
