Locals make up global dance troupe

COAST CITIES — — Artistic Director Betzi Roe, a long-time resident of Solana Beach, is a dancer, choreographer and the director of Dance at Coronado School of the Arts. After the dissolution of the San Diego Dance Alliance, Roe created Nations and brought the project to the Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) Foundation in 2009. Nations takes dancers into schools, produces a show just for county schools and offers CoSA dance students the opportunity to work with one of the dance companies. CoSA dancers then perform at the school day show along with other ethnic dance groups.

The members of Nanahuatzin Ballet Folklorico come from Vista and Oceanside. Nanahuatzin are always audience favorites at Nations. Ramon and Maria Garcia founded Nanahuatzin Folklorico Dance Company in August of 2000 in Oceanside. The goal of the company is to spread and promote Mexico’s culture through folkloric music and dance. Under the direction of the Garcias, the company works to preserve the rich heritage of traditional Mexican dances through researching and teaching the traditions of Mexico’s cultural diversity. The dancers are trained in both dance and geographical history of each state in addition to stage presence and body movement. Each show brings a colorful array of costumes and dances that represent Mexican folklore.

The director of the Morava Folk Ensemble (Serbia), Dobrila Undheim, lives in Vista and this dance group is new to Nations this year. The dances are energetic, the costumes take us to another land and the music toe-tapping. Morava Folklore Ensemble’s mission as ambassadors of Serbia and Balkan folklore is to perpetuate and preserve Serbian dance traditions in North America, as well as increase, expand and nurture a deeper understanding of the art of folklore. Morava Folklore was established in 1987 as an auxiliary organization of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in San Diego.
