Promoting open space in Carlsbad
Last summer the Carlsbad City Council voted to set aside $5 million for the acquisition of open space as permitted by the decade-old Proposition C. That was very good news to those of us who had campaigned for the preservation of natural open space in Carlsbad.
Recently, staff posted a video on the city’s website defining what the city considers open space and how it’s managed. Missing from the video were facts like park and golf course parking lots are considered open space.
Will the city council use that $5 million not to acquire more natural open space to enhance resident connection to nature but to develop the active waterfront along our southern beaches as part of the revised general plan?
Proposition C was loosely worded so that funds did not have to be used for natural lands in spite of what most people believed they were voting for.
