Creative Teen Scene ready for sign-ups

CARLSBAD — City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation department is calling all musicians, filmmakers and artists, ages 13 to 19, to enter your work in the city of Carlsbad’s 10th annual Teen Scene for the chance to share your talents with neighbors and friends and win prizes. Visit parksandrec@carlsbadca.gov or call (760) 602-7519 for entry deadlines and information.On Jan. 26, local teen bands, filmmakers and artists will showcase their talents from 4 to 9 p.m. at Calavera Hills Community Park, 2997 Glasgow Drive, including the Battle of the Bands, an art exhibition, dance room, film festival and video game truck. Admission is $5 at the presale rate until 4 p.m. on Jan. 25 and $8 at the door. For event details and to purchase tickets, call (760) 602-7519.

Area residents can also lend a hand at the Saturday trail volunteer event Jan. 12.

Join fellow Carlsbad residents in cleaning up and improving our local Carlsbad Oaks North Business Park trail at a volunteer event from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Volunteers will be provided shovels and rakes to help remove weeds on the trail. Work will also include erosion repairs, filling in ruts with decomposed granite and installing fencing. Visit parksandrec@carlsbadca.gov or call (760) 602-7519 for details.

In addition, the Leadership in Training and Education (L.i.T.E.) teen after-school program is accepting applications for middle and high school students in Carlsbad who wish to develop skills in leadership and communication and give back to their community. Students in the program volunteer for two community service projects a month and must attend the program three times a week and maintain good standing in school. L.i.T.E. runs from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at L.i.T.E. trailers at Pine Park, 3333 Harding St., and Holiday Park at Chestnut Street and Pio Pico and costs $25 a semester.
