Seniors can kick off energetic new year

CARLSBAD — The Carlsbad Senior Center, 799 Pine Ave., wants to help seniors start the new year right with various classes available.A two-week brain fitness class for adults, ages 50 and older, is being offered from Jan. 4 through Jan. 18 at the Carlsbad Senior Center. Held daily from 8 to 9:30 a.m., this two-week class is designed to strengthen attention, focus and memory with exercises that challenge cognitive skills. Exercises incorporate movie clips, music and exciting visuals, all delivered via the Internet. No computer knowledge is required and five levels are offered, tailored to participants’ cognitive ability. Participants work at their own pace and should plan on spending 20 minutes in the class three to five times per week during the two-week session. Fees are $25 for Carlsbad residents and $35 for non-residents. After four two-week sessions, participants will receive a diploma and be eligible to take the highly regarded “Brain Fitness: Insight” program.

Three free trial classes, for adults ages 50 and older, begin Jan. 7. Seniors are able to try one or all of the selected classes for free before registering, to meet the instructor and make sure the class is a good fit for them. No pre-registration is required.

The new offerings include:

— Live Long: Do Qigong!, 1 to 2 p.m. Increase energy, reduce stress and improve sleeping patterns. All physical conditions welcome.

— PiYo (Pilates and Yoga), 2:10 to 2:25 p.m., Reduce stress and improve core strength, flexibility and posture.

— Intermediate Yoga, 2:35 to 2:50 p.m., Create a union of body, mind and spirit. Not suitable for beginners.

The center will also offer Japanese Sumi-e painting classes weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. beginning Jan. 9. Sumi-e painting is characterized by the use of fundamental brush strokes based on simple lines and dots. This unique, ancient art form utilizes specialized painting techniques handed down from one Japanese master to another. Artists use rice paper, Sumi-e ink, ink stone and brushes. All levels are welcome. Fees are $50 for six classes for Carlsbad residents and $60 for non-residents. Drop-in fee for one class is $10. Materials are not included and a material list will be provided in class or can be picked up in advance.
