OCEANSIDE — Development of the first block in the nine-block CityMark downtown master plan will soon break ground.
Construction on the Oceanside Springhill Suites by Marriott is scheduled to begin in September.
The six-story Marriott hotel with underground parking will be built on the southeast corner of Myers Street and Mission Avenue.
“Having another hotel will be incredible,” Kathy Brann, city downtown development manager, said. “It will generate travel occupancy tax and spur more development downtown.”
During the 14 months of construction, stretches of Myers Street and Seagaze Drive immediately adjacent to the project will be closed. This will allow cement mixers and heavy trucks to get in and out of the construction site with the least interruption to downtown traffic.
Buses will be detoured around the closed roads and metered parking adjacent to the site will be unavailable during construction.
Additional parking will be available in a temporary parking lot south of Tyson Street.
Building will start with digging out space for the underground parking. The hotel will begin going up in December. By May 2013 interior work will start and in July the exterior framing will begin. The final building phase will be installation of the hardscape.
The hotel is expected to be completed by December 2013.
The finished hotel will have 149 rooms, a sixth-floor pool and spa, and a ground level seafood restaurant with outdoor seating. The seafood restaurant is expected to be one of the nicer restaurants downtown, Brann said.
The hotel will also boast an open-air deck on the second floor and custom finishes throughout.
“It will be customized above brand standards,” Robbie Knight, senior project manager of Ryan Companies, said.
No dates have been set to begin development of the other eight blocks.
