Garden gala salutes landscape legend

ENCINITAS — San Diego Botanic Garden announces its 13th annual Gala in the Garden, “Nature & Learning: Infinite Possibilities” set for 5 p.m. Sept. 8.As this year’s honored guest, Janet Kister will receive the Paul Ecke, Jr. Award of Excellence during the gala. Kister’s trade affiliations have included terms as president of the San Diego County Farm Bureau, president of the San Diego County Flower and Plant Association, president of the Orange County Chapter of the California Association of Nurserymen, board member of the Society of American Florists, and as a founding director of the San Diego Agricultural Energy Cooperative. She has also served as chairperson of the Southern California Plant Tour Days which received Floral Management’s Marketer of the Year award in 2000, and is one of the founders of the California Nursery Roundtable.

Kister currently serves on the Nursery Growers Leadership Board, California Farm Bureau Board of Directors, as chair of the California Farm Bureau Finance Committee and San Diego County Farm Bureau Treasurer. In recognition for her contributions to the nursery industry, she was honored as the San Diego County Flower and Plant Association’s “Person of the Year” in 1998. She was also honored as the 66th Assembly District Woman of the Year in 2004 and the San Diego County Farmer of the Year in 2006.

Guests will stroll through the Hamilton Children’s Garden and explore its different exhibits, listen to live entertainment, and participate in a silent auction filled with garden treasures, art and one-of-a kind experiences. Jim Ruecker, the chairman of the garden’s board of trustees, will chair the event. Additionally, Alissa Adams will co-chair.
