DEL MAR — Tessa Martin, a 15-year-old resident of Del Mar, just completing her sophomore year at The Bishop’s School in La Jolla, has been volunteering as a peer mentor at Positive Action Community Theatre (PACT) inclusive theater and dance workshops at 2061 Village Park Way, Suite 227, in Encinitas during winter and spring cycles of programs.

Martin describes her experience as a volunteer: “I’ve gained a greater understanding of how having an accepting environment can be liberating. It’s conducive to everyone’s happiness. The participants have taught me as much as I’ve taught them. It’s really wonderful.”

She plans on continuing her volunteer work at PACT in its summer eight-week session of Goldmine Inclusive Theater and Dance Workshops for Teens and Adults with and without disabilities, beginning July 14 at Dance North County in Encinitas.

Also offered is an eight-week inclusive children’s workshop series, also beginning on July 14. See pacthouse.org for details.

These programs are funded in part by Area Board 13 of the State Council on Developmental Disabilities, The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism, and the Puffin Foundation.

PACT is also rolling out a new program “Take the Stage” Performing Arts Workshops, which will bring a group of adults with and without disabilities out into the community to perform music, dance, and theater. This program is sponsored by the California Arts Council and National Arts and Disability Center at the University of California Los Angeles. “Take the Stage” will begin July 15 in Encinitas..
