Second salon opening
Angela Von Yokes and her sister-in-law Deena Von Yokes plan to open a second salon in the Del Rayo Village Center next to the Dolce Pane y Vino wine bar on San Dieguito Road in Rancho Santa Fe in early March.The women have been working together for 20 years, with their first salon in Del Mar for 15 years and then the Studio Savvy Salon and Advanced Hair Academy at 665 San Rodolfo Drive, 109A, in Solana Beach in the Lomas Santa Fe Towne Center. The new salon will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and other days by appointment only. For more information, call (858) 793-1581.
Politicians at work
Assemblyman Martin Garrick (R-Carlsbad), joined fellow Assembly and Senate Representatives to introduce a pension reform plan as state legislation. Garrick said that the pension reform plan is another step toward fixing the state’s broken pension system, which has been estimated by nonpartisan sources to have an unfunded liability as high as $500 billion.
Headed for success
Gonzaga University announced North County students who made the Dean’s List. Last fall, including Lindsey Drake and Haley Nordin, of Carlsbad; Leah Elkind, of Encinitas and Jason Rojeck, of Rancho Santa Fe.
Named to Gonzaga University’s President’s List were Nicholas Barthel, of Encinitas, Chelsea Caslavka and Kevin Quigley, of Oceanside and Meaghan Coogan, Troy Darrock, Michelle Eastwood, all of Carlsbad.
Gary Tincher, of Carlsbad, has graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor of General Studies in business.
Kristian Dawn Zook, of Carlsbad, has earned her Bachelor of Science from Excelsior College in Albany, New York.
Bocce sponsors
San Diego Self Storage will be a major sponsor of the 16th annual Del Mar Solana Beach Sunrise Rotary Turf Bocce Ball Family Day and Tournament, to be held at the Del Mar Horse Park March 4. This event will benefit Voices for Children, Just in Time and Community Resource Center. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to international projects, such as eradicating polio.
The event is hosted by the Del Mar Solana Beach Sunrise Rotary.
Rattlesnake season
COAST CITIES — Carmel Valley dog trainer Tracy Presson will be conducting Rattlesnake Avoidance Training at Markim Pet Resort, 4393 Carmel Valley Road March 11 and March 12. Both morning and afternoon sessions are available.

Top TPHS teacher
Congratulations to Torrey Pines High School English teacher Bobby Caughey, the most recent recipient of the Star Award. Awarded each semester, the Star Award is given by the previous winner to a fellow teacher who has been especially supportive — a professional, an example, a mentor, a friend and much more. The award was presented by Jen Turfler, last semester’s winner. According to Turfler, . Caughey “…is an inspiration in every aspect. …He makes you earn your stripes in his book!”
More great taste
St. Germain’s Bistro & Café, 1010 S. Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas, is extending February’s guest chef Isabel Cruz through March 10. Cruz will also host a book signing event from 6 to 8 p.m. March 7 for “Isabel’s Cantina: Bold Latin Flavors from the New California Kitchen.”
The Lady Chef series will continue in May with Kari Rich, in August with Dawn Parks and in November with Alvanette Kauwalu.

Tosto to speak
The Greater San Diego Transportation Club will host Carlsbad businessman and Export Administration Specialist Joe Tosto at a 6:30 p.m. dinner March 8 at Tom Hams Lighthouse, 2150 Harbor Island Drive.
Tosto has been with the Bureau of Industry and Security U.S. Department of Commerce since 2000 in management and sales and understands the regulations but can empathize with exporters and service providers.
