Venice during an Acqua Alta or high-water event. The highest flooding occurs between October and December. The worst deluge in the city’s history occurred in 1966, when floodwaters topped out at about 6.5 feet. Venice is built on huge timbers and is sinking at the rate of about 1 inch every decade.
