Robots ready to roll in Encinitas
The Grauer School’s Shockwave Robotics team, above, and its competitors from San Dieguito Academy, will be on hand at the Encinitas Library to co-host the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Showcase from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 26.

ENCINITAS — Robot fans, get ready for a gathering of the best local hardware and robotics expertise.For youngsters who want a close-up view of real robots or are just curious about engineering, science, math and technology, Encinitas Library will host the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Showcase from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 26, 540 Cornish Drive.

The showcase is a partnership between two local high schools: San Dieguito Academy’s Paradox Robotics and The Grauer School’s Shockwave Robotics. Both teams will bring various interactive robots to the library, including one that youngsters can drive. In addition, Lego building, games, and video demonstrations will be part of the fun. The two teams will compette again in March in the sixth annual San Diego Regional: FIRST Robotics Competition.

Shockwave Robotics is in its third year and has won both the Los Angeles and Las Vegas regional championships as well as the prestigious Inspire Award given to the team the judges feel best represents a role model FIRST Tech Challenge Team. The team that receives this award is a top contender for all other judging categories and is a strong competitor on the field.

Paradox Robotics was founded in 2006. The team consists of nearly 75 students who have gelled into an incredibly passionate and highly organized robotics “corporation,” with students managing outreach, marketing and grant-writing duties in addition to working on robots.

Activities for the FIRST Robotics Showcase will take place in various parts of Encinitas Library, including outdoor patios and Children’s and Teen areas.
