Coaster, Amtrak shut down Jan. 7 and Jan. 8

CARLSBAD — Rail construction in Carlsbad will affect the Coaster and Amtrak Service from 10 p.m.

Jan. 6 to 5 a.m. Jan. 9. as Amtrak construction crews work to complete improvements along the railroad tracks within the North County Transit District (NCTD) right-of-way in Carlsbad. Construction work will occur along portions of the rail line from Carlsbad Village Drive to areas just south of Cannon Road.

Coaster trains will not run Jan. 7 and Jan. 8.  NCTD will offer limited shuttle service from Oceanside, Encinitas, and San Diego Santa Fe Depot. For more information, contact (760) 966-6500 or gonctd.com.

Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains will operate on a limited schedule. Passengers traveling to destinations south of Oceanside will be transported by motorcoach. For Amtrak rider information, contact (800) USA-RAIL or amtrak.com. Additional construction is expected to occur in the same location nightly between 10 p.m. Jan. 9 and 5 a.m. Jan. 16. No impacts to rail service are expected.

Construction on this segment of the LOSSAN corridor is nearing completion. Amtrak hopes to complete all construction between Carlsbad Village Drive and Palomar Airport Road by February 2012. Because this is an active rail line, track work and bridge construction must be conducted during off-peak hours in the evening and on weekends. Construction crews will work to minimize noise impacts to residents and will direct lighting away from residential structures to the greatest extent possible. Information is available at keepsandiegomoving.com/carlsbaddoubletrack.

Amtrak is working with SANDAG and NCTD to add a 1.9-mile section of second track to the 60-mile Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) coastal rail corridor.
