Couple raises funds for diabetes research

CARLSBAD — Michael and Melissa Kovalcik announced the launch of Wave For A Cure, a social enterprise based in Carlsbad, dedicated to funding Type 1 diabetes research through the sale of apparel and products that represent the active lifestyles of those living with or touched by diabetes.
Founded by the Kovalciks and Mike Easley, the company’s debut apparel line will include screen printed T-shirts sold at select specialty retail stores, health fairs and through the company’s online storefront at waveforacure.com. A portion of every sale will be donated to charitable organizations that raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes and fund research to develop a cure for the disease.
“Wave For A Cure was inspired by our 9-year-old son, Nathan, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last year, Mike Kovalcik said. “Realizing he would have to endure this lifelong disease from such a young age left us feeling helpless at first. But we knew we needed to channel our frustrations into something that could empower our son and help others affected by the disease.
“We created Wave For A Cure to raise awareness and funding for Type 1 diabetes research, while also giving diabetics, like Nathan, products they can identify with, a way to express their strengths and abilities and a brand to call their own,” he said.
Easley, who is also the designer developing the Wave For A Cure brand, has a personal interest in the company because he suffers from Type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. It comes on suddenly, causes dependence on injected or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications.
November is World Diabetes Awareness month and Wave For A Cure marks the inaugural Type 1 Diabetes Day (T1Day), a new national day dedicated to boosting fundraising activities and raising nationwide awareness of diabetes.
Wave For A Cure has plans to expand its T-shirt line into a full line of apparel including sweatshirts, caps and sport totes for carrying diabetic supplies.
