College honors professor with new telescope

SAN MARCOS — A new telescope is being installed at the top of the city of San Marcos Double Peak Park, 910 Double Peak Drive, and will be dedicated at 6 p.m. Sept. 10. A special mural has been created with topographic and geographic information about the surrounding terrain.
The telescope is being dedicated to Thomas Wahlund, a Cal State Sam Marcos professor and resident of San Marcos. Wahlund died Sept. 11, 2008 after a brief battle with cancer. He was the published author of numerous research articles and was nationally and internationally known in his field. He was a beloved and inspirational teacher and personally mentored more than 100 graduate and undergraduate students at the university.
The new telescope will help to augment the viewing of locations as far away as the Coronado Islands off of Mexico, Catalina Island, Mt. Baldy, Mt. San Jacinto, the San Bernardino Mountain Range, the Volcan Mountains and the Palomar Mountains.
The telescope and mural project have been donated and completely paid for by friends of Wahlund. For more information about this project or the dedication, call (760) 744-9000.
