CARLSBAD — In July, the Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting its Community Health and Fitness Expo and the 30th annual Carlsbad Triathlon. The weekend is expected to draw thousands of local and out of town visitors.
During the June 21 City Council Meeting, Rachael Shay, representing the city of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department, gave a small presentation regarding the two upcoming venues since her department is hosting both.
After a short speech, Shay played a brief video clip of past triathlon highlights. While there, Shay gifted triathlon memorabilia T-shirts to the mayor and council members.
The day prior to the Carlsbad Triathlon, the Community Health and Fitness Expo will take place at the Westfield Plaza Camino Real on July 9, according to Shay.
“The weekend events offer something for everyone in the community starting with the Health and Fitness Expo which allows our local businesses to gather together in one location,” she said. “This weekend is made possible by the Parks and Recreation staff and the support of many local sponsors.”
Shay said more than 200 volunteers will pitch in to help with this signature weekend event.
The Expo provides a learning platform for people to glean more information on how to achieve a healthier lifestyle at any age. More than 2,000 attendees are expected to visit over 40 vendors.
The morning following the Expo, roughly 1,000 amateur and elite athletes will be warmed up for the triathlon on July 10. Shay expects more than 4,000 spectators gathering at the Tamarack State Beach Seawall on this day.
The triathlon includes a 1K swim, 25K bike ride, and a 5K run. The open-water swim starts at the Tamarack Surf Beach, dovetails into biking along scenic parts of Carlsbad, and then ends with a coastline run to the finishline. Shay calls the sporting event one of the longest running triathlons presented by a municipality in the West.
“These events help connect the community together by offering opportunities which achieve personal goals right in our backyard,” Shay said. “We invite you all to join us for the weekend.”
Mayor Pro Tem Ann Kulchin said she visited the last triathlon and encouraged her fellow council members to do the same.
“We had such a good time there seeing all the athletes,” Kulchin said. Visit carlsbadtriathlon.com or call (760) 602-7519.
