Carlsbad’s Thursday art event brings awareness

CARLSBAD — The fourth Thursday in June marked The Experience Thursdays on the Coast event, a night of art and music in downtown Carlsbad. Local artists displayed their work at 18 different galleries and businesses from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
A mix of accomplished and up and coming artists had their work on display. Established galleries were open late including The Foundry Studios, The COAL Gallery and Lynn Forbes School of Sculpture. Downtown businesses also displayed artwork including HomeLife Village Realtors and Via Pointe Resort Services.
“It gives artists an opportunity who don’t have an opportunity to show in galleries,” Cheryl Ehlers, event organizer, said. “There are seasoned artists and some you might not even know.”
On display were watercolors, oil paintings, steel sculptures, blown glass, handmade jewelry and photography.
In addition to the opportunity to talk to artists about their work there were painting demonstrations, live music, guided art activities and light snacks along five bocks in Carlsbad Village.
An information booth on Grand Avenue and State Street passed out maps for visitors to take the self-guided walking tour of art on display.
Local artists, musicians and business owners joined efforts to pull off the all-volunteer event hosted by the Carlsbad Village Association. “It brings an awareness to the village and shows off a different aspect,” Courtney Enriquez, management analyst of Carlsbad Housing and Redevelopment, said.
The fourth Thursday event will be held every month through October. “We hope to garner more and more interest,” Ehlers said.
Upcoming plans are to hold a silent street auction on artwork that can be viewed two weeks before the fourth Thursday event. For more information, see experiencecarlsbad.blogspot.com.
