Triathlon, paddlesurfing and more at sports festival

ENCINITAS — It’s time for the seventh annual Encinitas Sports Festival May 14 and May 15 at Moonlight Beach.
The festival is a collection of events including the Encinitas 5K Run, the 1K Kid’s Run, the Avia Encinitas sprint triathlon, the Moonlight Beach paddle and swim and the Encinitas Sports Festival Fitness Expo. Encinitas Sports Partners in association with Avia, Premiere PaddleSurf and Stellar Solar Energy are sponsoring the event.
Moonlight Beach will be the site for the fitness expo and all start and finish lines for all of the events.
“The triathlon is great even for the novice but has seen some of the best athletes in the sport competing,” Paul Huddle, part of the organizing team, said. “Last year’s men’s winner, Chris McCormack, was the 2011 Hawaii Ironman World Champion and we had Olympic silver medalist Michellie Jones win the women’s race a couple of years ago.”
This year the Fitness Expo will feature live music from the hometown bands Shoreline Rootz and Tower Seven.
“You will want to bring the entire family and spend the whole day at Moonlight Beach,” event organizer Roch Frey said. “We’ve got great food, product sampling, entertainment, a jumpy for the kids, and, of course, the beach.”
The Moonlight Beach Paddle features a 3-mile novice course and 6-mile course for experienced paddlers. “Moonlight Beach is the perfect place to celebrate the tremendous growth we’ve seen in standup paddling and traditional prone paddleboarding over the past few years,” said Dan Van Dyck, swim and paddle course director.
