Body count rises on Long Island beach as police search for possible serial killer

New York — CNN.com has reported that the search resumed April 5 near Gilgo Beach on Long Island, N.Y., after the remains of eight people were found by officials searching for a missing New Jersey woman.
Twenty-four-year-old Shannan Gilbert of Jersey City has been missing since May and was last seen alive in the area.
While searching for clues about her disappearance last year, authorities uncovered the bodies of four prostitutes in various stages of decomposition.
Another body was found March 29 west of Cedar Beach. When the body was determined not to be Gilbert’s, the search continued. On April 4 the remains of three additional people were found.
Police say the hunt for a potential serial killer continues, as does the search for Gilbert, who, like the women whose bodies have been found, advertised for prostitution services on such sites as Craigslist.
The first four bodies were found stuffed into bushes on Oak Beach, which Richard Dormer, Suffolk County Police commissioner, said indicated they were dumped there by the same person.
The remains of the fifth body were found nearly a mile away.
