COAST CITIES — Carlsbad yoga instructor Claire Petretti was among the five celebrity yoga experts chosen to lead a master yoga class March 5 for the 2011 Yoga for Hope Event, sponsored by the San Diego City of Hope center for cancer treatment and research.
The event registration is from 8 to 9 a.m.; ceremony from 9 to 9:30 a.m.; yoga and meditation from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., with vendor booths open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bayfront Park at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, 1 Park Boulevard.
Elizabeth Olson from Haute Yoga in Solana Beach will be presenting a check for more than $30,000 to City of Hope at the event, as well. Haute Yoga is bringing a full team to participate, including Petretti.
Petretti understands the benefits of yoga firsthand as a breast cancer survivor who practiced yoga to help focus mentally and physically during her treatment. A longtime yoga instructor, Petretti saw a unique opportunity to help people like herself, earning certification to teach yoga with a focus on patients recovering from cancer.
“While enduring multiple surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation, I continued to practice yoga and teach classes to other cancer patients,” Petretti said. “I wholeheartedly believe this experience aided in my physical and mental healing by helping me manage the anxieties of treatment, giving me more energy, increasing circulation and reducing sleeplessness.”
The proceeds from the inaugural event go to benefit research, treatment and education programs at City of Hope, aiding the treatment and research center’s efforts to expand awareness of the importance of the mind-body-spirit connection when battling cancer, diabetes or HIV/AIDS. The Yoga for Hope event was born out of City of Hope’s efforts to expand awareness of the importance of the mind-body-spirit connection and the hospital’s approach to utilizing complimentary and integrative therapies such as yoga and meditation in the patient treatment programs.
The other four chosen instructors include Tim Miller who teaches yoga around the world; Stacy McCarthy, founder of Yoga NamaStacy; Michael Fukamura an expert in Anusara Yoga and Bonnie Saldivar-Jones, a yoga teacher and consultant specializing in Ashtanga Yoga.
