CARLSBAD — Whenever Jim Baird drove by the Village Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, he often thought to himself that it could sure use a coat of paint. Then his mind would wander back to the days of his youth, and all the great times he had as a child inside that very clubhouse.
“My father owned A1 Auto Wrecking just down the street, so the Boys Club was the place my brother and I hung out every day,” Baird said. “Because of the club, we learned the importance of teamwork and involvement. I decided it was time to give back.”
The owner of Baird Painting took matters in his own hands. He recruited some friends, solicited a donation from Dunn Edwards, and the aging clubhouse received a much needed facelift.
Not to be outdone, younger brother Tom, who works at Nissho California, also found a way to give back. The La Costa Clubhouse was in dire need of landscaping services. Tom and his crew now donate their services bi-weekly to provide grounds upkeep.
“I, too, have fond recollections of my time at the Boys Club,” Tom Baird. “I learned how to swim at the pool. In fact, I’m still friends with many of the people I met there 40 years ago.”
“Jim and Tom have made a difference at both of our clubhouses on a real grassroots level, and we are grateful for their kindness,” said club Chief Executive Officer Brad Holland. “These guys saw a need and filled it. Their story is truly what the Boys & Girls Club is all about — fostering a sense of community and caring.”
