Tasty Chinese New Year tradition celebrated

OCEANSIDE — Chinese New Year landed on Feb. 2, and was celebrated at MiraCosta College with family-style dumpling making and feasting.
The celebration mirrored the Chinese New Year Spring Festival that is celebrated in China with family and food.
“We’re sharing the Chinese culture,” Bowen Son, Chinese Club member, said.
Son grew up in China and compared the Chinese New Year Spring Festival to major U.S. holidays. “It’s like Thanksgiving,” Son said. “It’s the biggest holiday in China.”
Chinese Club members showed eager participants at the workshop how to pat and roll dough to make dumplings. Then all hands helped prepare the treats.
The celebration brought food, fun and some Chinese language practice to the student center.
“I’m taking Chinese next semester,” Heather Flores, a MiraCosta student, said. “I guess I’m learning ahead of time.”
Chinese New Year celebrations continued on campus Feb. 3, with free food at lunchtime from Panda Express and a Chinese Tang Dynasty and Qing Dynasty fashion show.
A book fair and paper-cutting crafts were held at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore on Vista Way on Feb. 5.
The final New Year’s event is “The Blue Kite” screening at both the MiraCosta College Oceanside and San Elijo campuses on Feb. 11.
The Chinese Club holds monthly cultural events throughout the year.
