Heroic citizens and police officers celebrated

CARLSBAD — In front of a standing-room-only crowd of friends, families and well-wishers, the city of Carlsbad Police Department recognized exemplary achievements by members of the department as well as the public at its annual Police Awards Ceremony Jan. 26.
The 2011 awardees include:
— Police Officer of the Year, Bryan Hargett
— Civilian Employee of the Year, Bryanna Toussaint (Fingerprint/Evidence Specialist)
— Supervisor of the Year, Robin Hargett (Communications Supervisor)
— Police Explorer of the Year, Chris Lamaku
— Reserve Officer of the Year, Alex Mitkevich
— Southern California Crime Prevention Specialist of the Year, Jodee Sasway
— Senior Volunteer of the Year, Barbara Honig
— Station Volunteer of the Year, Tom DeCino
— Narcotics Task Force Officer of the Year, Jeff Smith
— DUI Officer of the Year, Robbie Snider
Department members were also recognized for safe driving, educational achievement, CAL-ID fingerprint hits, and distinguished service.
Several lifesaving awards were also presented to both officers and community members for heroic acts which resulted in the preservation of life. The community members and school staff from Kelly Elementary School were recognized for their heroic efforts during the shooting there in October 2010. Construction workers Mario Contreras, Steven Kane and Carlos Partida were singled out for apprehending the shooter. Officers Travis Anderson and Chris Karches, as well as Greg Cantor and Kyle Clements were recognized for their actions which saved a near-drowning victim in Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Chad Lake and Justin Barton were recognized for saving a toddler from a near drowning at La Costa Resort. Finally, community members Sofia Costa and David Peek were recognized for saving a surfer who had suffered a seizure in the water.
