City’s famous ‘Top Gun’ house celebrates 25 years of fame

OCEANSIDE — As home of the famous “Top Gun” House, Oceanside will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1986 movie “Top Gun” over Memorial Day weekend, May 27 through May 30. The celebration will include a special outdoor screening of “Top Gun” at the beach amphitheater, a celebrity volleyball tournament and other fun activities including food booths.
An iconic movie about military aviators, “Top Gun,” which starred Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, quickly became one of the blockbuster movies of its time. Set in San Diego, filming took place at several locations within the county with some of the most prominent and memorable scenes shot in Oceanside.
“Following the movie’s release, Oceanside became well-known for the ‘Top Gun’ house, an historic coastal bungalow that was used as the home of Charlie, the character played by McGillis,” said Leslee Gaul, chief executive officer of Visit Oceanside. “Many visitors seek out the house during their vacations and enjoy having their photos taken in front it.”
The house is located on a site that has long been approved for a new four-star resort. Due to the community’s affection and attachment to the bungalow, the resort’s current developer has plans to restore the home and incorporate it into the new resort, possibly as a coffee shop. Plans for the new resort will be on display during the weekend festivities.
Kansas City Barbeque, in downtown San Diego, was the site of the movie’s famous “Great Balls of Fire” piano scene, and also will take part in the weekend festivities.
