CARLSBAD — Everyone knows Cierra Halstead, Corey Cummins, Julianna Garner and Faith Waters are winners. Now it’s official. The four young people were selected as Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s Youth of the Year and finalists respectively.
The Youth of the Year program recognizes superior leadership skills, academic achievement, obstacles overcome, and outstanding service to Boys & Girls Clubs and the community. As Overall Youth of the Year, Halstead was awarded a $1,250 educational scholarship. First-runner-up Cummins and finalists Garner and Waters also received scholarships, courtesy of the Blackburn Foundation and Ted Vallas.
Currently a junior at Carlsbad High School, Halstead considers the Boys & Girls Club her second home. She’s a 10-year club veteran, and has participated in just about every activity that’s been offered. Currently she serves as the president of Keystone Club, the teen leadership program. “The club has shaped me as a person and has been the support system I needed to push through the hard times of my life,” she said. “It has been a life-changing experience, and I know I would not be where I am today without it.”
Recognition was given to all four members at Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s Super Star Dinner, held Jan. 26 at their Village Branch.
