Armed robber apprehended at Carlsbad restaurant

CARLSBAD — On Feb. 16 at approximately 11:48 p.m., Carlsbad Police Officers were dispatched to the Paradise Pizza Restaurant at 2564 State Street regarding an armed robbery.
Officers were notified that the store employees had removed a gun from the robber and were detaining the suspect.
On arrival, officers found 22-year-old La Costa resident Thomas Ruth being detained by store employees. Ruth was arrested by the officer who determined that Ruth had entered the store with a BB gun and a ski mask. He approached the employees and sprayed them with pepper spray.
When Ruth demanded cash, the employees resisted by removing the gun from him and physically subduing him.
Officers transported Ruth to Tri-City Medical center for treatment of a head injury that he
sustained during the scuffle. Ruth was booked into the Vista Detention Facility for 211 P.C., Robbery, 244 P.C., Assault with Caustic Chemical and 459 P.C., Burglary.
