Tri-City Carlsbad Marathon coming up fast

CARLSBAD – The Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon are scheduled for Jan. 23. More than 10,000 runners and walkers from all over the United States and many foreign countries are expected to participate in the race weekend festivities, according to In Motion, Inc., the event organizer.
A Health and Fitness Expo, from 2 to 6 p.m. Jan. 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 22 and 7 a.m. to noon Jan. 23, will feature vendors, interactive displays, free samples and apparel and equipment for sale. Free and open to the public, the Expo is also where all marathoners and half marathoners pick up their timing tag, bib number, T-shirt and goodie bag. The Expo will be held under a big top tent in the parking lot of the Westfield Plaza Camino Real, 2525 El Camino Real.
The 26.2-mile and 13.1-mile courses will feature tours through downtown Carlsbad Village, along oceanfront Pacific Coast Highway and past sandy beaches and lagoons. Participants will find support stations and live bands every mile, views of the Pacific Ocean and spectators and volunteers lining the course. Both races start and finish at Westfield Plaza Camino Real in Carlsbad. The marathon kicks off at 6 a.m. and the half marathon’s wave starts begin at 7:30 a.m.
The Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon works with 19 charities that use the event to raise funds and awareness through their association with the event. Race participants are encouraged to “run for a reason” by fund raising for one or more of the organizations, according to Christine Adams, CEO of In Motion, Inc.
The race weekend also includes a Kids Marathon Mile. The Kids Marathon Mile is set for 8 a.m. Jan. 22 at Legoland.
Event sponsors to date include: Tri-City Medical Center, Legoland California Resort, Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa, California Bank & Trust, Grand Pacific Palisades, The Running Center and Tiger’s Milk.
Participants in the marathon and half-marathon will receive a long-sleeved, technical fabric race shirt, goodie bag and finisher’s medal.
Registration for the 2011 Tri-City Medical Center Marathon & Half Marathon is currently closed. Both events sold out in October. Registration for the Kids Marathon Mile is still available. Entry fees are $20 for children prior to Jan. 15, 2011 and $25 thereafter, space permitting. Adult parent and/or guardian registration is also available.
