CARLSBAD — It’s time to clear out your garage and storage areas for the new year, as the city of Carlsbad is offering free, curbside pick up of those large and bulky items too big for regular trash pick up.
Residents who want to take advantage of this service must make a reservation between Jan. 11 and Jan.18. Items will be picked up Jan. 29.
Some of the eligible items include:
— AC units
— Barbecues (no propane)
— Basketball hoops
— Large appliances
— Water heaters
— File cabinets
For a list of items that qualify for the program and what is not allowed, visit www.carlsbadca.gov, under City Services/Environmental Programs.
To make a pick-up reservation, call Waste Management, the city’s trash contractor, at (760) 929-9400 or (760) 596-7444, during the registration period from Jan. 11 and Jan. 18, or sign up online through a link on the city’s home page. Residents are limited to two items per pick-up day. The city offers five bulky item pick-up days a year.
Electronic items, such as computers and televisions, are not eligible for pick-up and must be discarded at a qualified household hazardous waste facility.
Carlsbad residents can take their electronic waste to 5960 El Camino Real in Carlsbad, at (760) 929-9400, or 2880 Industry St. in Oceanside, at (760) 929-9400, or 1145 E. Taylor St. in Vista, at (800) 714-1195. Call ahead for hours of operation.
The city recommends residents consider donating useable goods to charity or allowing others in the community to use them. Waste Management is a partner with Freecycle, an online network where members give away and receive items for free in their own communities.
