Local school lends a hand to Afghan schoolchildren

VISTA — School Principal Karen Jonas, teachers and children from Faith Lutheran Schools have taken a community service project to a whole new level, all the way to Afghanistan.
The children at Faith Lutheran Schools recently assembled more than 1,600 items of school supplies that will soon be mailed, all 12 boxes, to Marjah Central High School as part of the Marines Adopt-A-School Helmand Project. This list of supplies included rulers, nonmetal bound paper notebooks, pencil sharpeners, handheld chalk boards, protractors, writing utensil holders, safety scissors, colored pencil packs, boxes of chalk, erasers, school glue and art paper. These items are being shipped in bulk to a Marine school coordinator at a Forward Operating Base in Helmand Province.
Marines from the Regional Command Southwest are accepting donations of school supplies from schools, churches and civic organizations to be used in schools in the Marjah, Garmsir and Nawa Districts of Helmand Province. These much needed school supplies will be used to support Afghan children who for the first time in six years have had the opportunity to attend formal schooling. Afghan girls were welcome into a schoolhouse for the first time in 20 years.
Adopt-A-School Helmand is a project that builds bridges between American children and Afghan children. By sponsoring a school, organizations will be supporting the work of Camp Pendleton Marines as they continue to serve the people of Afghanistan and give Afghan children the one possession nobody can take away — a formal education.
This program is being coordinated locally by retired Marine Master Sergeant Richard Dinse, who resides in Oceanside. If your school, church or civic organization would like to partner with the Helmand province schools and become a sponsor in assisting Marines with this Adopt-A-School Helmand Project, contact Dinse at RichardDinse@Cox.Net or call him at (760) 583-3087.
