Drive-by shooting victim dies

OCEANSIDE — A recent drive-by shooting that police suspect was gang-related has claimed the life of Edgar Luna, 18, who was removed from life support five days after he suffered a single gunshot wound to the head on Dec. 3 at the 200 block of Lustrosos Street.
The shooting took place in the North East section of the city, toward the back gate of Camp Pendleton and near Libby Lake Park.
No suspects are in custody and the Oceanside Police Department is seeking assistance from the public.
According to detectives, numerous people, including children, were bystanders as multiple shots were fired from the moving vehicle at around 8:17 p.m.
Because drive-by shootings have decreased significantly throughout the past five years, this recent incident has police very concerned, according to Lt. Leonard Mata, of the Oceanside Police Department.
A major reason for the decrease in these types of shootings is that street gangs are setting self-imposed restrictions, he said.
“Police are concerned this may signal a change in the way gangs are operating,” Mata said in a news release about the homicide.
Anyone who has information regarding the homicide of Luna is urged to call Detective Mark Lavake of the Oceanside Police Department at (760) 435-4872. Witnesses may remain anonymous.
