CARLSBAD — Carlsbad Educational Foundation announced its 10th annual Golf Classic event raised nearly $67,000 in contributions.
The event, held Oct. 7 at the Crossings in Carlsbad, attracted approximately 150 attendees for a round of golf and evening dinner program. Representatives from the Carlsbad Unified School District and celebrities Marshal Faulk, Willie Buchanon, Dokie Williams, Pete Shaw and Leslie O’Neil joined teams from the Carlsbad schools, local businesses and community groups for some enthusiastic play on the links.
The first-place overall winner of the golf tournament was a foursome led by sports legend Marshall Faulk, former Colts/Rams/SDSU running back and 12-time Pro Bowler. A foursome representing Calavera Hills Middle School won the “Golden Club School Challenge. The coveted trophy will be on display at the school until next year’s competition.
The annual event gave many local organizations and businesses the opportunity to reinforce their commitment to supporting public education. This year’s list of sponsors included Life Technologies, Barnhart Balfour Beatty, Gafcon, McCarthy Building Companies, Siemens, Piper Jaffray, TD Ameritrade, Ken Grody Ford, Port Brewing Company and Stone Brewing Company. Following a lively round of golf, attendees convened at the Crossings’ clubhouse for dinner and spirited bidding on live and silent auction items.
According to Valin Brown, chief executive officer of Carlsbad Educational Foundation, the continued community support for this event was rewarding, especially at a time when impending district-wide budget cuts are creating additional challenges for public education. “For the past decade, the Carlsbad community has supported the Foundation’s goals to enrich the lives of our students,” he said. “Now more than ever, this support is crucial in ensuring that Carlsbad students have access to innovative educational programs as well as hands-on science and district-wide music that foster learning and achievement. On behalf of the foundation, I would like to express our gratitude to all sponsors, community leaders and players who participated in our 10th annual golf tournament.”
The Carlsbad Educational Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that was founded in 1983 to raise private support for public education and the enrichment of nearly 10,000 students in the Carlsbad Unified School District.
