Bike the Coast draws more than 1,000 cyclists

OCEANSIDE — As the sun rose on Nov. 6, more than 1,000 cyclists gathered at the foot of Oceanside Pier to begin the Bike the Coast fun ride. Cyclists could choose between a 7-, 15-, 25- or 50-mile course down the coast. “It brings together a great bike ride, great location and great food,” Greg Hendrickson, event organizer, said.
All riders headed south on Coast Highway 101. The 50-mile ride looped back at Del Mar and the 25-mile ride turned around at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas.
Once back at the Oceanside Pier riders enjoyed a bike village of music, vendors, a beer garden and specialty foods. “It promotes bike fun as a community experience,” Hendrickson said. “We want people to say they want to come back next year.”
Many cyclists participated as part of a riding team. Krystal Finger, of Murrieta, rode the 15-mile course with her husband, two daughters and sister. “We’re training for the Hemet triathlon in December,” Finger said. “We’re participating in that race as a family too.”
“Training together and getting up early together makes training more purposeful,” Karen Vernamonti of Irvine said.
Proceeds raised at the event help support the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition.
