Museum takes quilt art to new dimensions

OCEANSIDE — Moving beyond the traditional notions of quilting and into the realm of contemporary fiber artwork, Quilt Visions 2010: No Boundaries will surprise visitors with 39 exceptional art quilts, at 704 Pier View Way.
Ranging in styles from abstract to representational, the quilts on view challenge one’s notion of what a quilt can be. Oceanside Museum of Art presents its fifth exhibition in conjunction Quilt San Diego/Quilt Visions. Of the artists represented this year, almost half are exhibiting with Quilt Visions for the first time. Quilt Visions 2010: No Boundaries is on view from Oct. 24 through March 13.
The exhibition opens with a preview reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 23. OMA’s receptions are known for their party atmosphere complete with wine and creative hors d’oeuvres prepared by OMA’s own Culinary Arts Council. Admission to the reception is $10. Members of OMA and Quilt Visions enjoy complimentary admission as a benefit of membership.
Learn more about the quilts in the exhibition during Balancing Act: The Art of Being an Artist panel discussion at the museum at 2 p.m. Oct. 24. Admission is $20 and complimentary for OMA and QV members.
Join Charlotte Bird, Beth Smith and other experts in the field of art quilts during an Afternoon with the Experts at 2 p.m. Jan. 22. The talk is free with admission. This exhibition is made possible by Irv Simpson and Valya Roenko Simpson, Carl and Christina Fredericks, Rudy and Elizabeth Van Hunnick, The Oceanside Charitable Foundation and by donors to the OMA Endowment Fund.
