Magazine sales scam targets Community Resource Center

COAST CITIES — The Community Resource Center in Encinitas has been made aware of a door-to-door magazine subscription scam using their name.
“An Encinitas woman was approached by Ultimate Unity, Inc., (sometimes known as Urban Development Solutions) which is known for its magazine subscription scams,” CRC Public Relations & Development Director Suzanne Colby said. “This can be verified online. This group is apparently knocking on doors in our community again. Because of the dramatic funding cuts to domestic violence shelters starting last year, this kind of a scam is especially harmful. Donors who think they are helping CRC’s Carol’s House or another shelter, are actually lining the pockets of these con artists. It’s very frustrating.”
“Supposedly you can sign up for a magazine subscription, and it will be
sent directly to the CRC or another shelter,” Encinitas resident Katie Scot, told CRC. They claim they actually send a subscription to the shelter for the women to browse through, and say that by contributing you are helping inner-city kids. They also mentioned De La Amporia shelter in Encinitas, which appears not to exist, as I could find no information about it online.”
The Community Resource Center is asking residents to be aware of this situation and wants to be certain the community knows that the Community Resource Center never uses door-to-door magazine subscriptions as a fundraising tool.
To report this or any other suspected scam, residents may call the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department at (858) 565-5200 or file an e-mail report at www. sdsheriff.net. Residents can also contact the state of California Attorney General’s office to report any kind of local, state of federal fraud or scam. Call the public inquiry line at (800) 952-5225, or file a complaint online by going to www.ag.ca.gov and clicking on Protecting Consumers.
