Beach Fair powered by sun

CARDIFF-BY-THE-SEA — One of the stars of this year’s Cardiff Surf Classic and Green Beach Fair will be the sun. The annual event, Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 at Seaside Reef beach, will be solar powered by Stellar Solar.
The main drive behind the event is to educate the community on how important and easy it is to lead a sustainable lifestyle. San Diego business and community leaders, government agencies and nonprofit organizations from all fields, including architecture, building materials, energy and conservation, food and agriculture, recycling, transportation, eco-friendly products and environmental education, will have booths exhibiting their services and products to encourage green living. The Green Beach Fair will also include healthy food vendors, a silent auction, and an art village for youngsters.
“Our mission is to bring environmental awareness to our coastal communities,” event Co-chairwoman Brenda Dizon said. “The devastation caused by the oil spill in the Gulf has caused us to rethink how we treat our environment. We have to realize that it all starts in our own community.”
“There are so many amazing eco-friendly products and solutions out there that are easily accessible to consumers,” event Co-chair Betty Steele said. “We want to continue that awareness and help encourage our friends, neighbors and community members to make a greener choice.”
In addition to the Green Beach Fair, the event will spotlight an all ages surf contest, as well as a Cardiff Biz Surf-Off. a contest between local businesses.
As in years past, attendees can enjoy entertainment, including local bands, as well as Dr. Zoolittle on Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. A Cardiff Fire Department pancake breakfast will be held both mornings from 8 to 10 a.m. at the beach.
