Juveniles on reckless driving spree collide with another vehicle in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD — On Sept. 22, 2010, at approximately 1:20 p.m. hours, the Carlsbad Police Department received a 911 call that a green Honda Accord was traveling
northbound on Aviara Parkway approaching Palomar Airport Road. The Honda was
being driven in a reckless manner and the passenger was throwing objects at
passing vehicles.
Officers located the Honda on northbound I-5, approaching Cannon Road. The officers activated their emergency lights and siren and the vehicle appeared as if it was going to exit onto Tamarack Avenue. The Honda passed Tamarack Avenue, slowed down with its turn signal on, indicating it was going to exit the freeway at the next off ramp.
The Honda exited I-5 at Carlsbad Village Drive. While on the off-ramp, the
Honda accelerated to a high rate of speed, hit a street sign on the N/E corner of Carlsbad Village Drive at I-5 and sped off eastbound. The Honda continued eastbound on Carlsbad Village Drive, at speeds reaching approximately 75 mph. At the intersection of Carlsbad Village Drive and Monroe, the Honda collided with a westbound vehicle, which had stopped at the intersection at the red light.
Three male juveniles occupied the Honda. The driver and one of its passengers were flown by Mercy Air to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, and the third passenger was transported by ambulance to Palomar Hospital in Escondido.
These juveniles sustained serious injuries, but they are not life threatening.
Linda Comstock, the driver of the second vehicle, which was struck by the Honda, was flown to Palomar Medical Center by a second Mercy Air helicopter for treatment. Her injuries were serious, but not life threatening.
At this time, it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved and the investigation is ongoing. If you were a witness to the reckless driving or a victim of objects being thrown at your vehicle, contact Sgt. Paul Reyes at the Carlsbad Police Department Traffic Division at (760) 931-2290.
