PARIS, FRANCE — CNN.com reports that the Eiffel Tower and surrounding park were evacuated the evening of Sept. 14 after a bomb treat was phoned in according to police.
The police press office said the alert was reported at 8:20 p.m. and was being treated as a routine occurrence. They also said the tower was being inspected to determine whether the threat was real. Police said the inspection was expected to be completed by 11 p.m.
Some 2,000 people were in the area when the evacuation was ordered, police said, according to CNN affiliate BFM-TV. “One person on the scene said the police came by and said there was a problem and they had to leave the area quickly, and that’s what they did,” CNN’s Jim Bittermann reported.
