Volunteers sought for advisory committees

DEL MAR — Residents are being sought to fill 11 vacancies on five of the city’s eight citizen advisory committees.
There are currently two vacancies on the five-member Communications Technical Advisory Committee, which oversees Del Mar’s local public access television studio operated through a contract with Time Warner Cable.
Committee members also review ordinances and policies to maintain local control over the city’s public rights of way and help protect residents from identity theft over wireless access systems.
With the terms of Bruce Bekkar and George Webb expiring this month, two seats will be available on the Energy Issues Advisory Committee. Council members recently discussed changing the name and expanding the scope of this six-member committee, which was originally created to improve energy efficiency for the 21st Street pump station.
Members currently assist the city in promoting clean and reliable energy and educating residents and businesses about energy-saving programs.
There are three vacancies on the 10-member San Dieguito Lagoon Committee, which oversees the preservation and enhancement of the San Dieguito Lagoon on local and regional levels.
The Finance Committee is seeking to fill one vacancy. This seven-member group reviews the annual budget and quarterly financial reports. It also researches and reports on financial issues such as a cost analysis of the fairgrounds, the development of the City Hall property and potential new revenue sources. Members should have finance experience.
The five-member Traffic and Parking Committee must fill three vacancies. Members seek to improve the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists by reviewing issues such as speeding, recurring regulatory violations, traffic congestion and parking problems.
“All of these committees are really doing some important work right now,” Mayor Richard Earnest said. “If those are subjects … any of you out there are interested in, there’s a lot of meaty stuff to work on. So it’s not just coming to twiddle your thumbs.”
The deadline to submit applications is July 16. For more information or an application, visit www.del mar.ca.us. Applicants will be required to file a financial disclosure statement.
