CARLSBAD – The Friends of the Carlsbad Library will hold a silent auction of rare and collectible books July 17 and July 18 in the Gowland Meeting Room at Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Lane.
The annual event features antiquarian books and sets, coffee table and art books, cookbooks and children’s books.
A few of the highlights of this year’s auction will be a signed volume by photographer Ansel Adams, a complete leather-bound set of Martin Luther’s writings in German and an antique stereopticon photo viewer.
Bids will be taken from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 17 and from 1 to 3 p.m. July 18. Winning bidders will be contacted and will have one week to pick up their books.
The Friends of the Carlsbad Library, an all-volunteer organization, raises money toward the purchase of books and materials for the library. The Friends also fund library programs, such as the Summer Reading Program and Carlsbad Reads Together in April.
The money is raised through special events and from year-round sales of used books and magazines at the Friends of the Library Bookstore, at the entrance to the Carlsbad City Library. In the store, most hardback books sell for $1, most paperbacks are priced at 25 cents and “gently used” magazines are available for 25 cents each. The store also sells music CDs, movie DVDs, books on tape, children’s books and a selection of large-print volumes.
The store is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and stays open until 7 p.m. on Mondays. The Friends of the Library also have used books for sale in the Book Nook at Georgina Cole Library, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive.
People can donate books and magazines by bringing them to the checkout desk of either library.
