Beach Bocce Ball tournament ready to roll

DEL MAR — Vigilucci’s Beach Bocce Ball World Championship XXX will take place on Dog Beach in Del Mar July 17 with check in 7:30 a.m. and tournament start at 8 a.m. The first phase, in which all 345 teams will be competing, is a Round Robin from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The tournament will have a record 345 two-person teams competing in four divisions this year: Men’s Open, Men’s Beginner/Intermediate, Women’s and Mixed. It is the oldest event on the beach in North County.
The tournament has always benefited North County children. The beneficiary for the first 25 years was the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito. Since 2006, the money raised has gone to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad.
There will be a record 70 courts set up on the beach. The tournament is played in two phases or rounds. Following the completion of the Round Robin phase, the top two teams from each court will move on to the championship, single-elimination round in their respective divisions. After the Championship Round is completed, 2010 World Beach Bocce Ball Champions will be crowned in all four divisions.
