Carlsbad K-9 cop lauded on retirement

CARLSBAD — Retiring K-9 officer Raven was honored for his service to the city of Carlsbad with a proclamation from Mayor Claude “Bud” Lewis at the Carlsbad City Council meeting May 11.
Raven, a Belgian Malinois, began his police service career in Carlsbad as a patrol K-9 in November 2002 and has been a dedicated member of the Carlsbad Police Department and partner to Police Corp. Torrey Cluett for more than seven years.
During his tenure at the city, Raven has worked on more than 4,000 calls, resulting in suspect apprehensions and the seizure of cash and narcotics. Raven has participated in many statewide K-9 competitions for narcotics detection, agility, handler protection, search, and obedience, and he has earned two Top Dog titles, six first place awards and dozens of other awards and ribbons.
Raven’s friendly demeanor and love of people allowed him to visit with school children and community groups. Additionally, he participated in charity fundraisers, such as Shop-with-a-Cop and the Special Olympics Tip-a-Cop night, where he was the highest earning participant three years in a row.
Raven will enjoy his retirement living with the Cluett family.
The city of Carlsbad Police Department’s K-9 program includes four active K-9s. Since the program began in 1978, the department has had almost 20 dog teams in service and has never lost a K-9 in the line of duty. One officer/K-9 team is assigned to each of the patrol division’s four watches, providing the city of Carlsbad with 24-hour K-9 coverage.
Police K-9s provide a valuable service to the department by assisting in the location and apprehension of suspects and increasing officer safety. Using their keen sense of smell, police K-9s can not only detect human scent but also assist in the search for illegal narcotics. For more information on the police K-9s, visit www.carlsbadca.gov.
