Garden Club still blooming after 50 years

SOLANA BEACH — A hat contest and raffle, high tea with scones and a flower-filled yard in full bloom highlighted the 50th anniversary celebration of the San Dieguito Garden Club held May 22 at the home of Jerry and Geri May Thirloway.
The blue-ribbon club was organized in March 1960. Its current projects include maintaining the therapy garden at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas and raising funds for the Hamilton Children’s Garden at the San Diego Botanic Garden.
The anniversary party was also a fundraiser to help refill club coffers, according to Jerry Thirloway.
“We’ve been spending money like drunken sailors on all our projects lately,” he said.
Attendees came from as far away as Glendale and Temecula, and one guest even flew in from Denmark. City Councilman Dave Roberts was also on hand to honor the club’s accomplishments.
