SOLANA BEACH — North Coast Repertory Theater presents a one-night only performance of “Let it be Art! Harold Clurman’s Life of Passion” at 7:30 p.m. April 14 at 987 Lomas Santa Fe Drive in Solana Beach.
“Let it be Art” is a dramatic journey of humor, boldness and fervor of the man heralded as “the elder statesman of the American theater.”
Ronald Rand — who is both actor and playwright for the performance — takes the stage as Harold Clurman in a solo performance, embodying the director’s voice, gesture and size.
Rand not only studied with Clurman, but has also penned a play about the Group Theater and its accomplishments.
Tickets cost $25 to $30 and are available at the box office or online at www.northcoastrep.org.
The play follows Clurman from his acting beginnings on the Lower East Side, through his education at the Sorbonne in Paris with roommate Aaron Coplan and his initiation into theater through several acting groups and close friends, leading to the founding of The Group Theater.
The performance also leads the audience into Clurman’s relationships with important figures like Marlon Brando and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, among others.
Rand is the publisher of the art and theater newspaper “The Soul of the American Actor.”
