New mag highlights high school sports stars

CARLSBAD — Every year, students face fierce competition when applying to top colleges around the country. High school athletes encounter an additional challenge, juggling sports and maintaining competitive GPAs to give them an edge over the rest.
Student athletes in North County are no exception. A new magazine started by two Carlsbad residents — Spotlight Sports — aims to profile the achievements of these local athletes as they work to become the next generation of professional sports stars.
“(Spotlight Sports) is designed to give you insight into what these kids are like,” said co-founder Scott Karl, a former Carlsbad High School baseball player. “The things that these student athletes accomplish are incredible.”
Launched by co-founders Karl and Jim Schwab, the magazine serves as a unique resource for student athletes and their parents. Cover stories and in-depth interviews on talented local athletes and profiles of professional superstars are meant to inspire and encourage athletes of every caliber, Karl said.
“You’re starting to read about your competition to see what you’re up against,” he said.
Spotlight Sports provides more than highlights of local talent. It also offers “how to” guides and college admission tips that students might not be getting elsewhere. From training advice and articles on how to save for college, the magazine strives to highlight any applicable issue that may give students an extra boost.
“It’s designed to help these kids get better at what they do,” he said.
Although originally intended for high school students, their parents and anyone interested in the local athletic programs, the magazine has received a lot of attention from the middle school community, Karl said. The younger students are bypassing the cover stories of famous athletes to hone in on a more attainable dream — becoming a standout player in a high school’s athletic program.
“It helps inspire them and gives them an understanding of the work that’s required,” Karl said. “The middle school effect was a very happy byproduct of our vision.”
As they continue to foster their vision, the founders are looking to do more than just “spotlight” local athletes and sports programs. The currently free magazine will soon be offered through a subscription service, with $10 of each $25 yearly fee going right back to the athletic programs, Karl said.
Spotlight Sports strives to be a “fully positive experience for these schools,” Karl said.
Spotlight Sports has grown exponentially since it launched in October 2009. The first issue of the bimonthly magazine covered 10 coastal schools and has expanded to include more than 20 athletic programs in Del Mar, Poway and Carmel Valley.
