Area resident Bruce Meyer was surprised to spot a herd of six deer foraging along the San Elijo Lagoon on Jan. 23. Palomar College Life Sciences Professor Dan Sourbeer confirmed the herd was the native Southern mule deer (O.h. fuliginatus), which are found throughout the South Coast. “It’s not unusual for these deer to be around,” Sourbeer said.” You just don’t usually see them.” Photo courtesy of Bruce Meyer
