CARLSBAD — A Carlsbad man was arrested and placed in the Vista Detention Facility July 14 originally under charges of public intoxication. More serious charges were added, however, when a call was received from the suspect’s residence, requesting he not be released from custody because he had abused his infant child.
Suspect Samuel Mariani was arrested at around 12:20 a.m. July 14 after he had left his residence in the 2600 block of Jefferson. Police had responded there to investigate a disturbance. The officers arrested Mariani for public intoxication and booked him into the Vista Detention Facility. Later, at approximately 1:24 a.m., another call was received from this residence requesting that Mariani not be released from custody because he had abused his infant male child.
Officers responded to the residence to check the welfare of the infant and discovered bruises and abrasions that were consistent with abuse. The officers added the charges of child abuse to Mariani’s arrest record. They also sought and obtained an emergency protective order for the victim. The victim was transported to Tri-City Medical Center for treatment then released to the San Diego County Protective Services.
