Underage drinking forum draws large crowd

VISTA — Hundreds of North County residents demonstrated that they care about their community and youth, as more than 300 people attended an underage drinking forum May 13 in Spanish at the Vista Academy of Visual and Performing Arts.
“People had to leave the event because there was no more room to sit or stand in the auditorium” said Leticia Robles, media specialist for North Coastal Prevention Coalition, or NCPC, the local organization who planned the event.
One of the expert panelists was Jesse Navarro, community relations officer for the San Diego District Attorney’s office. “I conduct presentations all the time but when I stand in front of a room full of people, it’s very rewarding” Navarro said.
Other panelist included Cesar Mora, assistant principal at Cesar Chavez Middle School in Oceanside, Dr. Beatriz Villarreal from North County Lifeline and Tania Nava a member of NCPC’s youth coalition. The forum was conducted entirely in Spanish and moderated by Univision’s senior reporter, Carlos Gonzales.
The previous week another similar event was held in Carlsbad. This particular forum was held in English and more than 100 people attended. Both events were organized by NCPC, which is committed to fulfill its mission to reduce the harm of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drugs in the cities of Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista through community action, education, support and collaboration.
