CIF playoff game dashes hopes for Knights baseball

SAN MARCOS — The Mission Bay Buccaneers dealt the San Marcos Knights a crushing 8-3 defeat at the CIF Division III playoffs at San Marcos High School on May 26. The loss ended a promising 12-14 season, which included a recent six-game winning streak.
The game got off to a promising start with team captain Steven “Fish” Fisher smacking a home run out of the field in the first inning. The Buccaneers quickly regrouped, however, conceding only two more homers. Both were made by center fielder Sebastian Vader in the third and sixth innings.
The team leadership took the loss philosophically. Pitching Coach Desi Herrera pointed out this year’s Knights were the best he’d ever seen.“We’re in the playoffs,” Herrera said. “We haven’t even been close to that before.”
“I’m really happy with what we did this year,” Head Coach Jeff Dufek said. “We’ve come a long way in a short time.”
Dufek said he had high hopes for next year’s team. The Knights will lose only two players to graduation before next season.
