Multicultural event salutes departing principal

CARLSBAD — The Jefferson Elementary School PTA invites the community to participate in its Multicultural Festival fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 16 at 3743 Jefferson Ave. This year’s festival is dedicated to Principal Carol VanVooren, who, after 13 years as principal, has accepted a position with Cal State San Marcos as a professor training future principals. VanVooren will give a farewell address at 1:35 p.m.
The day will feature dances and songs from around the world performed by students in each grade level, including the school band, Irish dancers, guitars, violin students and French club, with additional performances by Carlsbad High School’s MEChA Dancers and GoJu Karate. There will be game booths, prizes and carnival fun along with food from local restaurants, including Hunter’s Steak House, El Puerto and Knockout Pizza
Admission is free. Tickets may be purchased for games, carnival rides and other activities. Food and craft vendors will have items for sale.
