Celebrity Classic hits the green to raise green

RANCHO SANTA FE — Former NBA player Jack Marin won the San Diego Celebrity Classic on April 26 at Morgan Run Country Club. “I’m so tickled,” Marin said. “I think I got lucky.” Marin, 64, has a law practice in Durham, N.C., and plays celebrity golf tournaments all across the country. He was teamed with Chris Chandler, who was leading the tournament after the first day. But Marin played fast and steady and came in to win the event with an overall score of 143.
The 11th annual San Diego Celebrity Classic was held at Morgan Run from April 24 to April 26. More than 40 celebrity golfers participated, including NFL Hall of Famers Jerry Rice, Jan Stenerud and Chris Chandler; Olympians Bruce Jenner, Dan Jansen and Mike Eruzione; and entertainers Ray Romano, Craig Shoemaker and Tom Dreesen. Legends of fans attended to see their favorites compete and to volunteer their services.
The biggest winner of the event, however, was the Rady Children’s Hospital. All proceeds go to the Brooke Humphries Fund, which benefits the Orthopedic Care Clinic. The fund was established by former Celebrity Classics host Stan Humphries whose daughter, Brooke, underwent life threatening heart surgery. Over the years, the Celebrity Classic has raised more than $1 million for Rady’s Children Hospital and other local charities.
Sunday was also Military Appreciation Day and all military and their families were admitted for free. The fourth annual event was a special “thank you” to all the men and women serving San Diego County. The Celebrity Classic teamed with San Diego Armed Services YMCA to host the military event.
Military and their families also received a free lunch as well as a coupon for a free haircut courtesy of Sport Clips Haircuts.
Last year’s reigning champion Mickey Tettleton returned and happened to be teamed with Jack Marin, who won this year’s event. Even though the competition between players was keen, the attitude on the links was playful and generous. Fans ate up the good-natured jokes and chiding remarks they heard from the celebrity players. “Even in this economy, it’s nice to see people giving so much,” comedien Dreesen said.
Next year’s Celebrity Classic is already in the planning stages. The annual Rancho Santa Fe event at Morgan Run is one of the yearly highlights of the community. For more information, visit www.sdcelebrityclassic.com.
