San Marcos launches new Web site with city documents, calendar

SAN MARCOS — In the ever-changing Internet world, San Marcos’ eight-year-old Web page has been a dinosaur. Not anymore. On March 27, a completely redesigned Web presence, commissioned by City Council in June 2008, went online.
“The new look is inviting, easy to use and
really reflects the San Marcos unique identity,” Communications Officer Jenny Peterson said to City Council at a sneak preview March 24.
Developed by Vision Internet, a company devoted to building government Web sites, the new site incorporates a host of new features. There is now a searchable event calendar and an electronic document center. Users can sign up for electronic newsletters as well as fill out online surveys and browse city job postings. During emergencies, a breaking news section will appear on the front page.
Navigating through all of the features in the new site is a lot easier than before, according to Peterson. “We set for ourselves a three-click goal, which means all information should never be more than three clicks away,” she said.
Behind the scenes, the new site can handle more viewers at a time, and a simplified content manager means virtually any employee can administrate and update the site.
Peterson said that the site had plenty of potential for growth. Possible improvements include online resident complaint tracking, engineering and building permitting and job applications. The site may even dabble in social networking, coordinating with Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.
San Marcos’ new Web site can be found at www.ci.san-marcos.ca.us.
